Let Kansas City Track Club (KCTC) assist you with one of your New Year’s Resolutions, “Eat better, avoid injury, train in inclement weather, run through the mental blocks, run a marathon, or simply improve your fitness level as KCTC presents “Running on Solid Ground.” This five series program on Thursday evenings will be conducted at the Kansas City Plaza Library’s (4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64112) Large Conference Room from 6:30-7:30 PM with a social following each event at Spin Pizza (4950 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64112). Spin Pizza has been kind enough to extend a 10% discount to KCTC members on the dates of each clinic. Events are free and open to the public. We will raffle a Road ID gift certificate!

January 12^th, Garry Gribble will discuss dressing for the weather and safety. The Norwegians have an expression, “there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” Come and have your questions answered on winter attire to ensure you are training no matter what the weather brings.

January 26^th, nutritionist Shannon Beattie and Mindy Coolman will present “Running Nutrition” as they discuss improving performance and health via diet. Attend and have your questions answered on sports drink or not, post workout diet, carbo-loading, etc.”

February 23^rd, Dr. Tom Cotter presents “Running Form/Running Trends.” Gain efficiency in your stride and hear about the benefits of minimalist running.

March 1^st, Dr Tom Cotter and Brad McCleary present “Injury Prevention/Performance Enhancement/Physiological Effects.” Come and get the most current medical research to minimize injury while simultaneously improving performance for your spring race.

March 22^nd, Beth Salinger, race director for Hospital Hill will be walking us through preparations for “Conquering Hospital Hill”.. Prepare for this fun race with getting details on how to make it a successful run! This will be broken into two sections the first will start a 6:30 and will focus on “Preparing for your Initial Hospital Hill Half Marathon” and the second will be at 7:30pm focusing on ”Race Strategies and Advance Training Tips for the Hill”

KCTC’s St Pats 4 Miler, Brew To Brew & Cliff Hanger have all been named as State Championship Races by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). According to the RRCA: “The goal of the RRCA Championship Event Series is to shine a spotlight on well-run events and to award top performing runners in the open, masters (40+), grand masters (50+), and senior grand masters (60+) categories for both men and women at the National, Regional, and State level to RRCA member clubs and events to promote the sport of distance running.”

Alan Poisner Does It Again!

Alan Poisner, long time member of KCTC is the USATF National Race Walk Committee’s Race Walker of the Year for his age division (age 75-79). He won a gold medal at the USATF Indoor, 3,000-meter walk in Albuquerque in March, took gold at the National Senior Games in Houston in June (1500 meters and 5K); and earned three golds at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Sacramento in July (5,000 meters, 10k and team 10k). Congratulations to one of our own on such a wonderful accomplishment!

Aide Station A Success!

Thanks to our 53 volunteers that helped KCTC with Aide Station #2 at 3.9miles. It was fun and Lou and Dave had a special surprise- each volunteer received a KCTC logo hat and custom dyed orange gloves to wear that morning. At least we know the fashion police won’t be after KCTC members!

Beginning Runners Class Starts Sept 26th

The fall new runners and walkers class will start at 5:45 pm on Monday, September 26th. The tenth and final class will be November 21st. The classes start at Garry Gribble’s Running Sports store in the Ward Parkway Shopping Center, between State Line Road and Ward Parkway, and between 85th and 89th Streets. The class is for fast walkers, new runners, and former runners who want to get back into running.

We go 3.5 miles to start and work our way up to 5 or 6 miles by the end of 10 weeks. Each class is preceded by a fifteen minute discussion of a topic related to running. Students are given a pamphlet with notes on each discussion topic.

The Kansas City Track Club Ambassadors are a tight-knit community of runners and walkers in the Kansas City area. As a KCTC Ambassador you do not have to be the fastest runner, or the most experienced, but you do have to be passionate and dedicated to helping grow the running community in Kansas City. KCTC Ambassadors are role models in their communities, lead group runs, volunteer at local events and help all runners achieve their personal best.

How do I become a KCTC Ambassador?

Besides being awesome, we are looking for people who are outgoing and can make a difference in the Kansas City running community by promoting the mission of the Kansas City Track Club. Here are a few more things we are looking for.

Member in good standing of Kansas City Track Club.
Passionate about running and motivating runners of all skills and ability to achieve their best.
Passionate about achieveing YOUR personal best.
Able to volunteer three (3) times a year for the KCTC community at events or races.

Intervals sessions are FREE for KCTC members and are Tuesdays at 5:30pm in Franklin Park, Prarie Village just south of Somerset and Roe Blvd and Saturday 6:30am leaves from Aixois at 55th and Brookside Blvd with training in Mill Creek Park on the Plaza. Run from Aixois to The Plaza for your warmup. If you need help with pacing yourself, your form or want to run faster, Intervals sessions will help.

I am heading back to Manhattan to begin my senior year at K-State, and the thing I will miss the most about Kansas City is the Kansas City Track Club. I moved to Kansas City for the summer as an intern. Being from a small town, running alone in the city was intimidating. Luckily, I stumbled upon the Kansas City Track Club. Everyone I’ve met has been so incredibly welcoming. Running with this group has made it much easier to venture out into the heat or drag myself out of bed to run early in the morning. With their company, I managed to run the farthest I’ve ever run in my life. Thanks for a great summer, and I can’t wait to come back next year!

Steve Fuller competed in all 50 states & every continent

It would be unfair to call Steve Fuller’s bucket list an actual list. There are just too many categories to it. In the course of a conversation with the North Kansas City attorney, he’ll rattle off the number of Mexican states he’s visited or tell you about his goal of getting to every country in the world. “It’s actually two lists (of countries to visit),” Fuller said. There are the countries in the United Nations he’d like to see and then there are all the sovereign states to visit, which is a much larger list. And Fuller is all about lists. Perhaps his most remarkable is the tally of the 145 marathons he’s run. Fuller claims he is the first person from Kansas City to run a marathon in all 50 states and he’s run the 26.2-mile race on every continent.

Sunday Run – New Time Option

The Sunday Long Run will now start at 6:30am and then we will run back to meet anyone that wants to start at 7:30am instead! Meet at the Hen House parking lot in Prairie Village Shopping Center at 71st and Mission Road. This is usually a large group with all paces from 7.5-13 minute miles. It’s HOT…bring a water bottle to carry along!

There’s alot of buzz about the new Sat 6:30am running group meeting in front of Aixois at 55th St and Brookside Blvd. The plan is to meet your needs wherever you are in your running life. We will have a course mapped out for any distance from 3-12miles. 12 miles this week is where you want to be if you are training for the KC Marathon. If you want to increase your speed or it is a shorter mileage week, a coach will run with you to Mill Creek Park on The Country Club Plaza to do shorter distance and intervals. If you want to go longer than 12 miles, we will have maps for that too! We will leave at 6:35am and run as long or short as you want. If you want to run with a group but don’t see what you need here, then show up and talk with us about it…..we will have what you need in subsequent weeks! Have coffee at Aixois after the run if you have time!

Race Walker National Senior Games in Houston

The Heartland RaceWalkers competed on June 24-25th in the National Senior Games in Houston, TX. The weather was hot and humid. All competitors had won medals in their state games. The 1500-meter race was held at a high school track (35 miles from Houston) that had been upgraded to world-class status in order to be ready for the National Junior Olympics in 2012. The 5K race was on the concrete around the Reliant Arena (4 loops). In an all-too-common goof, they had mis-measured the course and the final distance was probably about 300 meters short, hence the excellent times.Several PR’s were set. Jean Brunnenkant won a Gold Medal in her 5th different age-division (75-79; 80-84; 85-89; 90-94; 95-99)!! Alan Poisner also won another Gold in a new age-division (70-74; 75-79).

KC Track Club members Paul Gorman and Natasha Harris are co-hosting a fundraiser benefiting the Whitefield Children’s Orphanage in Trinidad. Natasha is leaving KC to spend 1 year at the orphanage doing any/everything she can to help the children.

Classic KC BBQ Catering will be providing the Buffet. Paul is owner/head chef with 30 years experience BBQ’ing. (Paul hosted a WNR recently and we can testify he’s the real deal – a Bar B Que artist!).

What: Working to organize or sort food donations at the food bank/distribution center

You don’t have to be a member, just enthusiastic about donating a couple of hours of your time to one of the biggest and best food banks in the country. Kids over 6 years old are welcome, too. You’ll also get a tour of the facility, if you’d like!

Please dress casually, ready to work in a warehouse
No sandals, flip-flops or other open-toed shoes
Minimal jewelry, etc.
Children under 6 are not permitted to participate, for safety reasons, but there is no child care provided. All participating children should be closely supervised by parents at all times!

The class meets at 5:45 pm at Garry Gribble’s Running Sports in the Ward Parkway Shopping Center. You can walk, walk and jog or try running the entire way. The class lasts 10 weeks. KCTC Brew Ha Ha

After ten days of rain and tornado warnings, clear blue skies greeted the first KCTC Brew-Ha-Ha. About sixty members and guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers, on the outside patio at The Well in Waldo.

Leaders of club activities (Trail Nerding, Intervals, Long Runs, Beginning Running, Run/Walk Local groups) were introduced. Inside, President Nancy set up a colorful display of club clothing at fire sale prices and we had a slide show of great KCTC photos running on the giant TV.

It was a great beginning, so keep your eyes open for the next one.

We entered a team at the Leavenworth Five Trails Half Marathon in the Mixed Masters Division. There were 6 runners (see below) and we all did well. Some did especially well.

Looking For A Long Run Training Group? KCTC sponsors a year round Sunday morning Long Run Training Group every Sunday at 7:30am. The group leaves at 7:35am sharp. Meet at Prairie Village Shops at Mission & Tomahawk Rds and Park in front of Hen House. David Virtue of BIG MILES TRAINING will organize the run. Participants will be grouped into 3 paces- Fast, Slow and Slower. This is a long run, not a race. Choose 6mi, 10 mi options or anything in between. Distance will be increased as desired by the participants.
There are water stops along the route or you may want to carry your own water. KCTC will not place water coolers along the route.
New to Running but want to go the distance? Some individualized training is available to get you started.
Free for KCTC Members. Memberships are $15.

Brooks Williams, the ultra runner with cystic fibrosis who’s been written up in Runner’s World won the solo Brew to Brew title this year. Alan Poisner Takes Gold!

The USATF National Masters Indoor Track & Field Meet was held in Albuquerque March 4-6. A KC Track Club member, Alan Poisner won a Gold Medal in the 3000-meter walk in the 75-79 age division on a banked track in the convention center. His time (19:47) would have been good enough to take Silver Medals in the 65-69 and 70-74 divisions. The altitude (a bit over 5,000 feet) did not seem to bother him since he attained an 80.5% age-graded result but the low humidity caused everyone to suffer from very dry throats & some coughing. Way to go Alan!

It’s always a wonderful night at the R*d Dress R*n with the Kansas City Express. The cold didn’t stop the hardy while the non-running crowd enjoyed the social side. There were many great red garments on view, ranging from serious glamor to a bath robe. It’s all about supporting Women’s Heart Health. You can see more photos at SeeKCRun.com. We’d call it a R*d Dress R*n but we have been warned by the Hashers that they own the phrase and we don’t want to find out what the punishment is for appropriating it.

Girls on the Run of Johnson County is expanding to 24 sites this spring and is in need of volunteer coaches. Volunteering as a coach is a life-changing experience. You share your time and energy, and instill a positive self-image in girls 3rd-8th grade.

Added incentives this season:
1. If you sign up to coach and have a daughter participating in the program, you will receive a 50% scholarship on her registration fee.
2. New coaches who commit before Feb. 4 will be entered in a raffle to win a seat at the WIN for KC luncheon where longtime Girls on the Run coach Karli (Ritter) Lockard will be honored as the Sprint Spirit Award winner at this event.

Over 120 runners and walkers gathered at the Athletic Club of Overland Park to welcome the New Year with a run on the nearby trails. At the club there were snacks and hot drinks and a chance to catch up with old friends. This year was cold but sunny with no ice on the roads and trails – a perfect way to start 2011. The Nerds start early and do the tough WyCo trails before the rest of us start off to circle Wyandotte Co. lake on nice asphalt roads at the MARA sponsored Chili Run. Many people need motivation in the winter to keep running. Here is Lou’s advice to keep you going through the cold, dark months!

Wear a reflective vest
Subscribe to Runners World so that receiving the monthly magazine reminds you that you are a runner
Find and join a running group; this can be just one person who likes to run with youor one of KCTC groups.
Run at least three times a week.
Take some running stuff when you travel on business or holidays.
Sign up for a 5K race so that you have something to prepare for.
Attend the Wednesday night run and potluck supper (www.kctrack.org)

Cat Woman at Blue Springs 50/50

Sunday was the 16th running of 50/50 now run on the Little Blue Trace trail in Blue Springs, MO. The run billed as a 50 miler or 50k, has added shorter distances like the marathon and half marathon to accommodate the rest of us. There is even a race walkers division.

The photo is by David Remley, a photographer who lives in the Historic Northeast and often photographs around the KC Museum and Cliff Drive. Jared Coones 5K – starting em young!

The Olathe Running Club and Sam Micelli, staged the biggest Jared Coones 5K yet with 3500 participants – 1500 were grade school and middle school students! As one older runner observed, “they are the future of running”. Some of the schools even had their own tents, banners and special tee shirts. The new session of the beginning runners class started last night. The class toughed out the unseasonably hot weather and came back after 3 miles looking like seasoned runners. Wednesday Night Re-Run-derful Evening

Emma (top) beat out some serious competition, twice her age, to win the overall Hula Hoop event.

It was a perfect evening for the annual WNR ReRun at the Loose Park Pavilion when old friends and brand new WNRunner’s gathered to celebrate another year of WNR (thanks Maggie!). There was of course lots of food and a run – a poker run with cards handed out along the way, BJ the DJ as MC and ring master, a raffle, games, and lots of kids. Lucky winners got KCTC apparel and free entries to the Cliff Hanger. BTW, a poker hand has 5 cards. Trudy Nepstad won the Poker Run HANDS DOWN. What’s a Flush?

Heart of America Marathon Winners

Dan Werkovitch Impresses WNR Friends

Dan Werkovitch completed a 340 mile endurance race across Missouri in a boat and astounded his KCTC friends. Dan endured miles of wind, heat, bugs and rain and finished in less than 88 hrs. It wasn’t no mama’s boy float trip. AND THEN he whipped up some barbeque and potato casserole for WNR with friend Andy OHara at his new condo. The woman between Andy and Dan is Josie Dan’s girlfriend, who surprised him at the finish of the MR 340 by greeting him in St. Charles at 11:00 pm Thursday night as Dan pulled to shore.

KCTC volunteers work an assembly line making up packages for the BackSnack program that feeds over 8000 area school children. The kids take home a backpack filled with food for the weekend, and for many this may be the only food they get. We got a wonderful response to our email blast asking for volunteers and special thanks go to Misty McNally for organizing the event. We also contributed $300 and 184lbs of food. What a great afternoon!

Come out and get muddy – very muddy and help raise some money for Harvesters. There’s a MUD PIT to cross and a Mud Slide!
Costumes are encouraged & prizes will be awarded in many categories!
Spend part of your weekend getting down and dirty. Post race facilities will be provided to “clean up your act”.

For those that just want to GET MUDDY: a 1-Mile “Mud Dunk” Run.

And, it’s a Family Picnic: Lunch will be served after the run! Bring your blanket or chairs.

Donny Danner Places at Kirk Veach 5K

KCTC and Northland Runner member Donny Danner places 2nd overall out of 204 runners at the Kirk Veach Memorial 5K in Lawson, MO. Kirk Veach 5K is an annual event to raise funds for Organ Donation and is part of the Lawson Annual 3 Day Picnic complete with Parade, Festival, Strawberry Festival and much more.

The Thursday Night Leawood Runners have added a bike option to their workout routine. Meet at Leawood City Park at 5:30pm to bike and 6:30pm to run. You will always know who is going to show up by going to their facebook page. Bring your bike and /or running shoes to the parking lot adjacent to the basketball courts. This is a great shady course for those hot summer days!

The Cooker, aka Bob Cook, long time KC runner and KCTC member is out of the hospital (twice) and recovering after falling off a ladder and breaking 6 ribs. The lesson here is: 1.) hire someone to clean your gutters and 2.) running keeps you in great shape. Bob’s doctors told him his great physical condition and strong lungs saved his life. We are all awaiting the Cooker’s return to running and more importantly to hanging out with the gang at the 75th St. Brewery Monday evenings.

Shawnee Park is a great place to run!
