This program will you lead you to the newest half marathon in Kansas City that I promise you will want to do each year from here on out! The Scout Strong Challenge begins in finishes in the beautiful Sporting Park. The race will lead you all over the area including a fun lap around the Kansas Speedway, it is one half you will not forget! You dont have to do this race to take the class but we strongly recommend this one!

The class will have a 15 minute chat session and some hands on lessons for new runners to get an overall feeling of how to get out and keep running. January 8th: Running on Solid Ground Series will kick off with Eladio Valdez, if you haven’t met Eladio this is the perfect time! January 31st:  Leawood is getting a new group run and beginners running class! Starting at 6:15 at Elite Cycling in Mission Farms, anyone wanting to learn to run will get lessons each week to get you ready for race day and any thing running throws you way, weekly schedules for running,  access to RRCA coaches and weekly email recaps. If you just want a group to run with on Thursdays than meet at 6:30 for the group run! More information on this class will be up this weekend!

The Northeast was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and while many of us are unable to go up in help we can help by packing the streets on Wednesday November 28th to run in support for all those who were victims of this storm. The Kansas City Track Club, in cooperation with Garry Gribble’s Running Sports,  is turning over our Wednesday Night Runs to help raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief. This is a casual fun run and welcome everyone to come and share with friends so we can show the Northeast that Kansas City is here to help!

KCTC took time this week to meet several runners at the KC Marathon Expo! We were able to chat with local and visiting runners about the club, some of our fun races that we put on and our awesome KCTC apparel!

After all these years, Mark Westfall finally met Bill Rogers at the KC Marathon Expo. Mark dug out Runners World Jan 1986 and The Runner Nov 1981 for Bill to autograph. Awesome!

On race day, the track club handled water stop number two and it was one amazing group of volunteers! We appreciate all who came out to help and loved cheering on all the runners in the Waddell & Reed Kansas City Marathon cant wait to do it again next year!

Dr. Kimberly Roys and Darla Mouce from Johnson County Imaging Center will be presenting on the importance of breast exams and mammograms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And like every Diva Night, there will be drawings for great prizes so bring a friend or two and enjoy an night with the ladies from GGRS!

Three members of the KC Track Club recently took part in the racewalking events at the Kansas Senior Games in Topeka on Sept. 23. They included two veterans and a rookie. The veterans were BJ Thornburg and Alan Poisner who have previously won medals at the National Senior Olympics-and they had no problem winning medals in Kansas. BJ was 1st in the 1500-meter walk (F65-69) and also qualified for the nationals by virtue of her finish in a swimming event the previous day. Alan was first in the M75-79 in both the 1500-meter and the 5000-meter walks and lapped the field in the longer race. The rookie was John Anderson who had never entered the Kansas Senior Games before. He took 1st (M70-74) in both the 1500-meter and the 5000-meter walks and thus also qualified for the National Senior Olympics to be held in Cleveland in 2013. John also qualified in cycling by virtue of his performance on another day. He had the advantage of a cheering section, Maggie McCoy. Heartland Racewalkers came away with 10 Gold and 5 Silver medals, including one by Jean Brunnenkant in the women’s 1500-meter walk in the 95-99 age division! While you’re at it, it only takes a minute to e-mail your KCMO council in Districts 4 and 6 and voice your opinion. Districts 4 and 6 are where the Trolley Trail passes through. Find their contact info at the link above. Snail mail is effective too.

The Brooksider is a wonderful neighborhood feeding and watering spot just south of 63rd Street right on the Trolley Trail. If your company has a health fair, it would be great if KCTC could add a booth! This is a great outreach and everyone we go to motivates someone to go to our class or a group run!

KCTC Members! Here is your chance to meet runners from out of the area and help them make their experience in KC a positive one. We are making plans to start a new program; The Buddy System. The Buddy System will be on our website offering out-of-town runners a “buddy” during their race weekend here in town. The buddy would be someone to either do a run with them, tell them about local running  courses, help them get around, offer advice on where to eat, stay, or shop, or whatever they need while here. At this point we need to know who is interested in being available as a future “buddy”, what limitations we should place on the buddy, and any other constructive input you have thought of. We know of one other running club doing this, in New Mexico. That club left the concept of “buddy” open ended; whatever the host felt comfortable offering, be it sleeping at the home, or just rides, or something as simple as restaurant suggestions. This may look like a big number, but not to worry.  Just go to the Quick Trip on Wornall Road, just north of I-435 and look to the east side of the street.  There, nestled in among the tanning salon and the Dunkin Donuts is none other than Fuzzie’s.  This is a fun, friendly place where we can run along the trail and then come back and order some yummy food from the menu.  Thank Misty and Richard McNally for finding this new treasure for us.

Want to know the best part? The Series was FREE! Now I realize that some people like to pay entry fees for races and spend lots of money on running apparel. The more sensible crowd prefers to get all of these for free. So if you’re a practical, logical, mentally sound person, be sure to sign up for the Summer Racing Series! Even if you’ve already participated in the first Series event (Hospital Hill), you can still sign up and get credit for your participation in that event.  There are 8 more left in the season and you must participate in a total of 3. You owe it to yourself and your pocketbook to check it out. All I am saying is give the KCTC Summer Racing Series a chance.

Availability… the setup of the van will include the wall displaying all of the current and (near future) models, a table for give aways and the wear test shoes. Currently the wear test shoes are: Guide 5, Triumph 9, Hurricane 14, Cortana, Kinvara 3 and Mirage 2.

Dust off your running shoes and get them out of the house and onto the pavement this week! With such a great response to our Spring I class, we have decided it was time to start a Spring II Beginning Runners Class! This Monday night, March 5th, you can join us at 5:45 in Ward Parkway Mall at Gary Gribbles location!   This is a class for new walkers/joggers/runners,  those who gave it up but want to start again, persons who walk with a vengeance or anyone looking for good conversation on a Monday night!  By the end of the ten weeks, we will run a a 5k and beyond!  Track Club members are able to take the class for free! Paul Gorman will be leading this class with the help of Courtney Foster.  The famous Lou Joline will be stopping by to run with us in-between his crazy schedule!

January 26^th, nutritionist Shannon Beattie and Mindy Coolman will present “Running Nutrition” as they discuss improving performance and health via diet. Attend and have your questions answered on sports drink or not, post workout diet, carbo-loading, etc.”

February 23^rd, Dr. Tom Cotter presents “Running Form/Running Trends.” Gain efficiency in your stride and hear about the benefits of minimalist running.

March 1^st, Dr Tom Cotter and Brad McCleary present “Injury Prevention/Performance Enhancement/Physiological Effects.” Come and get the most current medical research to minimize injury while simultaneously improving performance for your spring race.

March 22^nd, Beth Salinger, race director for Hospital Hill will be walking us through preparations for “Conquering Hospital Hill”.. Prepare for this fun race with getting details on how to make it a successful run! This will be broken into two sections the first will start a 6:30 and will focus on “Preparing for your Initial Hospital Hill Half Marathon” and the second will be at 7:30pm focusing on  ”Race Strategies and Advance Training Tips for the Hill”

We go 3.5 miles to start and work our way up to 5 or 6 miles by the end of 10 weeks. Each class is preceded by a fifteen minute discussion of a topic related to running. Students are given a pamphlet with notes on each discussion topic.

The Kansas City Track Club Ambassadors are a tight-knit community of runners and walkers in the Kansas City area. As a KCTC Ambassador you do not have to be the fastest runner, or the most experienced, but you do have to be passionate and dedicated to helping grow the running community in Kansas City. KCTC Ambassadors are role models in their communities, lead group runs, volunteer at local events and help all runners achieve their personal best.

How do I become a KCTC Ambassador?

Besides being awesome, we are looking for people who are outgoing and can make a difference in the Kansas City running community by promoting the mission of the Kansas City Track Club. Here are a few more things we are looking for.

• Member in good standing of Kansas City Track Club.
• Passionate about running and motivating runners of all skills and ability to achieve their best.
• Passionate about achieveing YOUR personal best.
• Able to volunteer three (3) times a year for the KCTC community at events or races.
• Contributing on a monthly basis to the KCTC Blog, telling your ambassador story.

This is an out-and-back course, with a “lollipop” at the end of the out and back. A FLASHLIGHT OR HEADLAMP IS REQUIRED TO RUN ON THIS COURSE.  This is the oldest night trail race in the Midwest. Read the 2009 Running Times article.

You don’t have to be a member, just enthusiastic about donating a couple of hours of your time to one of the biggest and best food banks in the country. Kids over 6 years old are welcome, too. You’ll also get a tour of the facility, if you’d like!

• Please dress casually, ready to work in a warehouse
• No sandals, flip-flops or other open-toed shoes
• Minimal jewelry, etc.
• Children under 6 are not permitted to participate, for safety reasons, but there is no child care provided. All participating children should be closely supervised by parents at all times!
• For those interested, we’ll meet up at Pizza 51 afterwards for pizza and beverages. (The order and tab is the responsibility of each individual party.) If the weather is good, there is a lot of outdoor seating.

After ten days of rain and tornado warnings,  clear blue skies greeted the first KCTC Brew-Ha-Ha. About sixty members and guests enjoyed drinks and appetizers, on the outside patio at The Well in Waldo.

Leaders of club activities (Trail Nerding, Intervals, Long Runs, Beginning Running, Run/Walk Local groups) were introduced.  Inside, President Nancy set up a colorful display of club clothing at fire sale prices and we had a slide show of great KCTC photos running on the giant TV.

It was a great beginning, so keep your eyes open for the next one.

10th Annual Tom Logan Memorial

Brooks Williams, the ultra runner with cystic fibrosis who’s been written up in Runner’s World won the solo Brew to Brew title this year.  He’s shown with Andy Henshaw (red shirt) who holds the B2B course record.  What a great day for running and fun!  And raising money for CF.  KCTC expects to donate nearly $40,000.

Old and new friends gathered despite freezing drizzle warnings for a mellow evening with a bit of outdoor activity.  Although KCTC never plugs area businesses, we have to tell you to check out Lisa’s new boutique, Luticia Clementine’s, on the square in Independence.  It’s soon going to be called Lily Wolfgang (a much cooler name we think)  and will host an open house in late January.

Lots of beautiful holiday lights on our WNR from Ziva’s, including her blue and white Hanukkah decked house.  From now until New Year’s we recommend the Brookside / Plaza area for some great ligh displays, like the Country Club Plaza and Romany Road off Ward Parkway.

KCTC was doing the finish line again this year at the Sprint Thanksgiving Day 5K.  About 7000 people came  out to run fast or walk slow before the big meal.  That’s Trail Nerd Brad Bishop one of our great volunteers.  And really it wasn’t that cold after you get used to it.

• Wear a reflective vest
• Subscribe to Runners World so that receiving the monthly magazine reminds you that you are a runner 
• Find and join a running group; this can be just one person who likes to run with youor one of KCTC groups.
• Run at least three times a week.
• Take some running stuff when you travel on business or holidays.
• Sign up for a 5K race so that you have something to prepare for.
• Attend the Wednesday night run and potluck supper (www.kctrack.org)
